Bible describes how christ ascended bodily to Heaven forty days after his resurrection. He is lifted by angels while the virgin, mary magdalene and the apostles watch in amazement. shape of relief suggest that it was the crowning element of an altarpiece.

Bacchanal
This skillfully composed relief is one of several versions showing the worshippers of Bacchus, the god of whine is classical mythology. Dalou made it in London, but returned to Paris lather in the same year and reworked the composition in marble as a decoration.
